California Woman Accused of 'Licking' $1,800 Worth of Groceries

Police in South Lake Tahoe, California arrested a woman who is accused of licking dozens of items inside a Safeway grocery store worth about $1,800.

Jennifer Walker, 53, of South Lake Tahoe, was booked on suspicion of felony vandalism on Tuesday, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department said in a statement.

According to the release, officers were called to the Safeway grocery store over a report of a "customer 'licking' groceries inside the store."

"When officers arrived on the scene, a Safeway employee informed them that the suspect put numerous pieces of jewelry from the store on her hands," the release from the department states. "The suspect licked the jewelry then began to load her cart with merchandise from the store. The employee informed the officers that all the items in the suspect’s shopping cart were deemed unsellable due to the cross-contamination."

Costume jewelry, meat, and liquor all had to be destroyed, police said.

Walker was arrested and booked in the El Dorado County jail. She's currently being held on a $10,000 bond.

Many grocery stores have experienced similar problems, with one store in Hanover, Pennsylvania needing to throw away $35,000 worth of food after a woman went through the store and coughed on meat and produce items, while stating that she had the coronavirus.
