Officer Disciplined for Conduct at Riot

At a press conference Monday, Erie Mayor Joe Schember announced what discipline will be taken against an Erie police officer seen on video appearing to kick a protester during the recent downtown riots.

The Mayor announced that the officer is suspended for three days without pay. He will be limited to desk duty once he returns until sensitivity training is complete.

City officials say the officer used his foot to push the protester in an effort to get her to move. While officials say that is approved police procedure, Mayor Schember says force was applied in an inappropriate manner.

The Mayor also said the city is revising police policies and procedures based on the new city, state, and federal initiatives and reforms.

The city’s report has been turned over to District Attorney Jack Daneri for an independent investigation.
