Team USA's Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin made history by defeating Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner of Italy to advance to the gold medal match in the mixed-doubles curling semifinals during the third day of competition at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Monday (February 8).
Thiesse and Dropkin won on the final shot of Monday's match against Italy, the defending gold medalists from the 2022 Beijing Games, to become the first USA mixed doubles curling team in history to win an Olympic medal at least guaranteeing a silver ahead of tomorrow's final round against Sweden, who defeated Great Britain in its semifinal matchup. The Americans finished with a 6-3 record in round-robin play, which included an 8-7 win against Sweden on Sunday (February 8).
Elsewhere, American figure skaters Madison Chock and Evan Bates finished second in the qualifying round behind Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron of France in the rhythm dance qualifying round. Chock and Bates scored 89.72 with a technical score of 51.54 and a program components mark of 38.18 setting up for a showdown with France in the free skate on Wednesday (February 11).
Eileen Gu, the U.S.-born freestyle skier who opted to represent China, took silver in her first event of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Monday (February 9). Switzerland's Mathilde Gremaud won gold in the Olympic Freeski Slopestyle with a score of 86.96 from her best of three jumps, edging out Gu's best score of 86.58.
The result was a repeat of the 2022 Beijing Games when Gremaud defeated Gu, 86.56 to 86.23, in the Slopestyle event. Gu, 22, went on to win gold in the Big air and Halfpipe events in 2022, which she's still heavily favored to win at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games.
Team USA women's hockey improved to 3-0-0-0 with a 5-0 win against Switzerland on Monday. The Americans jumped out to an early lead with first-time Olympian Haley Winn within the first seven minutes before a second period goal by Joy Dunne and three third period goals by Hannah Bilka, Alex Carpenter and Caroline Harvey.
