President Trump says Iran's Supreme Leader has been killed. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Ali Khamenei, "one of the most evil people in History, is dead." This after Israeli officials said he was among the top leaders killed in joint strikes with the U.S. Khamenei had ruled over the country since 1989. In his post, Trump said there is now a chance for the Iranian people to take back their country. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council is holding an emergency meeting this afternoon at the request of Russia and China.

The UN Security Council is holding an emergency meeting this afternoon at the request of Russia and China. It comes after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the military escalation in the Middle East. In a post, Guterres said the "use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region undermine international peace and security." He also called for an immediate end to hostilities and de-escalation.

European leaders are condemning Iranian missile strikes on other Middle Eastern countries. The leaders of the U.K., France and Germany issued a joint statement calling for Iran to resume negotiations and stop its attacks on neighbors in the region. They also expressed concern about the U.S. air strikes against Iran with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer making it clear the U.K. played no role in the attacks. The three leaders also expressed their concern for "regional stability" and backed calls for Tehran to end its nuclear program. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister said his country supports the U.S. in acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

This military action follows the collapse of last-ditch mediated talks in Switzerland on Thursday and comes after months of a significant U.S. military buildup in the Middle East—the largest since 2003—aimed at compelling Iran to accept demands regarding its nuclear program.

Israel officials say the airstrikes conducted by the U.S. and Israel were in the works for months. A statement released by the Israel Defense Forces said in the months leading up to the attack joint planning was done by the IDF and the U.S. Army. The U.S. has not mentioned planning of the operation or how long it has been in the works for. In an X statement, the Israeli foreign minister said, "inaction would have been far more dangerous than the decision to act." Iran has accused the U.S. of violating "all international laws and during negotiations."

It is just after midnight in Tehran, and according to multiple news organizations, social media and eyewitness accounts spontaneous celebrations are underway in the streets of the Iranian capital. The late-night celebrations are happening as news spreads of the death of Ayatollah Khamenei and other Iranian leaders. Videos show people in the streets cheering, honking horns and chanting freedom slogans. The Iranian protest movement started in late December and was sparked by economic collapse in the country. The nationwide demonstrations had demanded regime change. The uprising's most violent phase occurred in early last month when Iranian security forces opened fire on crowds killing thousands of protesters.

The NYPD is increasing security at locations across New York City in response to the U.S -Israeli attack on Iran. The NYPD said in a statement that out of an abundance of caution, they will add patrols at diplomatic missions, cultural institutions, religious and other vulnerable sites. Meantime, Governor Kathy Hochul says, she's added more troopers to possible targets state-wide and that there are no threats at this time.

This is a developing story.
