Fatima Iqbal-Zubair, a Democrat running in California's 65th Assembly District on an anti-war platform, was revealed to be married to a man who works for one of the United States' largest weapons manufacturers, the California Post reports.
Fazlul Zubair works as a systems engineer manager for Raytheon, which built the Tomahawk missiles reportedly used in the Iran strikes that took place over the weekend, which Iqbal-Zubair publicly condemned.
“I have no comment,” she told the California Post when asked to respond to the contradiction between her policy stance and her husband's employment.
Iqbal-Zubair previously ran for state assembly in 2020 and 2022, having been endorsed by the Democratic Socialist of America, which shares anti-war policies and calls for the reduction of funds to the U.S. military. The candidate failed to disclose her husband's income on her financial disclosure form and received a warning letter from the Fair Political Practices Commission during her 2020 campaign.
Screenshots from a since-deleted X account show Iqbal-Zubair allegedly posted to “demilitarized our entire world & defund the Pentagon" in 2022. The politician also wrote "enough endless wars" and "enough enriching war profiteers and billionaire interests" in a Facebook post shared on January 4, which included a photo of herself next to protesters holding a "stop bombing Venezuela" sign.
Reports indicate that her husband's company was vital in the Venezuela attack that led to the country's former President Nicolás Maduro being captured by American troops.
